Updated: Mar 3

Choosing the right products for your hair extensions can be tricky. Once you've invested in beautiful hair extensions, it's essential to maintain and care for them properly to ensure their longevity and keep them looking good. Choosing the right products for your hair extensions is crucial in maintaining their quality, shine and overall health. In this blog post, we will provide you with essential tips and recommendations to help you select the best products for your hair extensions. Let's dive in!

Shampoo and Conditioner

When it comes to washing your hair extensions, its important to rid the hair of any outside environmental residue or styling aids. Some shampoo can strip the hair extensions of their natural oils and cause them to become dry and brittle. It's important to use professional shampoo and conditioner in order to give your hair extensions the best results. Look for products specifically formulated for hair extensions, as they are designed to nourish and protect the hair without weighing it down.

Additionally, avoid applying conditioner directly to the roots or bonds of your extensions to prevent slippage or damage. A few of my favorite shampoo and conditioner finds are Kenra Clarifying Shampoo is great when you want to completely reset your hair extensions and clarify it form environmental pollutions.

Kenra Moisturizing Shampoo is amazing to use as a second cleanser behind the clarifying shampoo or just as a double cleanser by itself depending on what you want to achieve. But the main purpose is to intentionally put moisture back into the hair extensions and into your natural hair underneath the hair extensions. Then its great to follow it up with the Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner and leave on 5-10 minutes making sure to get it throughout your natural hair and your hair extensions. Rinse with cool water to shut the cuticle. And you are ready to get the party started!

Leave-In Conditioner and Detangling Spray

Invest in a high-quality leave-in conditioner and detangling spray to keep your hair extensions soft, manageable, and tangle-free. These products help hydrate and protect the hair, making it easier to comb through without causing any damage. Look for lightweight formulas that won't leave a residue or weigh down the extensions. Make sure to go light on the leave in on the hair extensions but on your natural hair you can go a little bit heavier. I love staying with one product line when starting out with new hair extensions so that you can figure out what product you cannot live without. Kenra Daily Provision Leave In is my go to choice for the best hair extension leave in conditioner.

Heat Protectant

If you regularly style your hair extensions with heated tools like curling irons or straighteners, a heat protectant is a must have. heat protectants create a barrier between the hair and the heat, reducing the risk of damage and maintaining the integrity of the extensions. Look for heat protectant that offer thermal protection up to 450 F (232 C) and apply them before styling. My personal favorite is Kenra Hot Spray.

Styling Products

When it comes to choosing styling products for your hair extensions, opt for lightweight options that won't weigh down the hair or leave a sticky residue. Avoid products containing alcohol or oil-based ingredients, as they can cause the extensions to become greasy or attract dirt and debris. Look for products specifically formulated for extensions, such as hairsprays, mousses, or serums that provide hold, volume, or shine without compromising the extension's quality. A few stylist products I like but use very sparingly are Kenra Platinum Working Spray and Kenra Volume Mousse. And we cant forget Kenra's serum Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss

Brushes and Combs

Invest in a high-quality, wide-toothed comb or a loop brush specifically designed for hair extensions. these tools are gentle or the hair and extensions, minimizing breakage and tangles. Avoid using regular brushes with bristles that can cat and pull on the extensions or the thread of the hair extensions, causing damage or loosening of wefts or bonds. Two of my favorite to try out is the WYNK brush for detangling and Bestool Boar Bristle Brush.

Choosing the right products for your hair extensions is essential in maintaining their quality, shine, and overall health. Opt quality professional shampoos and conditioners, leave-ins conditioners, and detangling sprays to keep your extensions soft and manageable. Dont forget to use a heat protectant when styling and opt for lightweight styling products formulated for extensions. Investing in the right tools, such as wide-tooth combs like the one by HYOUJIN or loop brushes such as Scalpmaster Hair Extension Paddle Brush , will also help keep your extensions tangle-free. By following these tips and using the recommended products, you can ensure that your hair extensions stay beautiful and last for a long time.
